Sites and Sounds of Kawabi

Ever hear the sound of rain on an umbrella and think of the rain falling on the tarps of the tents?

Or how about the sound of a screen door closing on a warm summer evening, I can't hear that sound with out thinking of the famous Kawabi Lodge.

Can you remember the sound of the fans from the walk in fridge and freezer cooing the food for the Kawabi kitchen from June to August,as you walk near the lodge?

The humming of a dish washer reminding you of the kitchen dish staff working away in dishes after a busy yet tasty Kawabi dinner?

The spectacular sun rise from behind Big Hawk Island

The sound of a paddle pushing through the water helping propel a canoe to its final destination

The tears seen rolling down the faces behind a candle at closing camp fire

The roar of applause in the lodge after ones accomplishments have been shared with the entire camp at announcements

The sound of the camp bell waking up a tired camp from a deep sleep

The roar of the engine from Kawabi Ski firing up for a busy day on Big Hawk

The clinging noise from the sail boat masts as the boats are tied up at the sail dock after a wicked day of sailing the gusty winds from Big Hawk

The sound of children's laughter during a morning weather skit

The glowing faces tanned from the hot summer sun shining from the lights in the lodge at meal times

The smile on a camper's face after they've received their paddle

The cheering noise from the beach helping the participants in the Hawk Lake Canoe and Swim arrive back to Kawabi safely

The crackle and pop from the closing camp fire

The sight of Kawabi cedar strip canoes in the distance traveling away for an overnight, the sun shines off the paddles with a mirror like reflection

The hugs goodbye as campers and staff load the buses for the long ride home

That waft of hot air hitting your face on a cool and wet August morning when you enter the lodge for hot oatmeal.

The smell of John's soup.

The laughter of many children at the trough in the morning, trying not to spit toothpaste on each others toothbrush

The chapel bell clanging so gently and the peaceful walk to chapel.

The sound of a chippie rummaging through an empty brown tuck sack left on the floor at nighttime.

The smell of clean warm laundry after a week of August rain. (so sweet)

Nish, bending down in a warm wooly sweater to comfort a homesick or hurt child.

Staff trying to dump the water in very fast to the coffee maker and place the pot underneath before the coffee starts to come out!? Then watching Skip laugh at the whole thing from the Head Table.

Laughter, laughter and more laughter.

The fallen trees, stepping on them and having your foot sink into the decaying moss

The smell of fresh bread in the morning, on those very special days.

The sound of the senior boys stacking the tables in the lodge for one of those very special events.

Finishing of KP as all the other staff congregated in the lodge as the hub closed.

The calling of loons, and little hands cupped trying to make their first loon call.

The plunk, as someone entered the water from diving rock.

The slap of a canoe hitting the water after a long single portage.

The roughness of the rocks on your knees as you climbed a small rock face

The water drops from the leaves as you did a rainy day hike

The pop of the bb guns and the shattered paper of the target
